Caldwell makes neither firearms nor ammunition. It makes what surrounds the shot: the rest on which the rifle sits, the bag beneath the stock, the bipod, the chronograph that measures the load, the hearing protection and the target at the other end. The company sums it up in a line repeated throughout its literature: remove the variables that cause misses. It says nothing about its foundation —no year and no corporate history— so none is invented here.

It is one of the American Outdoor Brands companies, within the group’s Marksman line, and is manufactured by AOB Products Company, the name printed in the footers of its catalogues. It operates from Columbia, Missouri, the only address it publishes: that of its warranty department.

What the brand does date is its flagship product. The Lead Sled “revolutionised shooting rests more than twenty years ago” and remains the centre of the catalogue: a rest with a ballast tray loaded with shot, sand, water or weight plates that absorbs up to 95% of felt recoil. It lets a magnum be zeroed without ending the session with a bruised shoulder and without acquiring the habit of anticipating recoil, the quietest way to miss a shot.

The rest of the catalogue follows the way a firing point is assembled. There are cast-iron front rests —the Rock family, with micrometric windage and elevation—, leather and polyester DeadShot bags or moulded-polymer DeadShot Air bags, the tripod Stable Table, and aluminium XLA and carbon-fibre Accumax bipods with the four mounts used on the market: sling stud, Picatinny, M-LOK and KeyMod.

The other half is measurement and accuracy. Ballistic Precision chronographs leave the factory calibrated to ±0.1%; the G2 reverses the sensors to take readings in poor light, even indoors. At the far end of the range is 3/8-inch AR500 steel. According to the specifications Caldwell publishes, it withstands impact velocities of up to 3,000 feet per second and energies of 3,500 foot-pounds, with a lifetime commercial warranty on the plate.

For clay shooting the brand advances an argument of its own. The clay target was invented in 1880 to replace the glass ball and the live bird and has changed little since; the ClayCopter instead uses a biodegradable disc that the launcher spins at up to 15,000 rpm, flying along paths that imitate a bird in flight. The Claymore launchers, by contrast, throw standard clays without a battery, using a pedal and a fifty-target magazine.

Caldwell publishes a limited lifetime commercial warranty, subject to its terms.
