History

The three-ounce bottle

Birchwood Casey makes no firearms or ammunition: it makes what is applied to them. The company dates from 1948 —“since 1948, serious shooters, collectors and professional gunsmiths have trusted Birchwood Casey” is literally all it says about itself— and now belongs to GSM Outdoors, the group named at the foot of every page in its catalogue. It is one of the group’s two brands that we distribute, alongside Walker’s.

Its name is attached to three products, the same three the brand names when introducing itself. Tru-Oil, a blend of linseed and other natural oils, restores the hand-rubbed finish of a stock without yellowing or cracking. Perma Blue, a liquid or paste cold blue, restores a rubbed area without stripping the firearm or putting it through a tank. Shoot·N·C targets reveal a green ring around each hit and save the walk downrange.

Around those three is a catalogue arranged by material. Metal: Perma Blue and Super Blue for steel, Aluminum Black for aluminium, Brass Black for brass and bronze, Plum Brown for browning a muzzleloader, plus the blue-and-rust remover and degreaser used beforehand. Wood: sealer and filler, walnut stain, Tru-Oil, wax and synthetic-stock rejuvenator. Cleaning and lubrication: Gun Scrubber, Bore Scrubber, black-powder solvent, Barricade rust protection, synthetic oil, RIG greases and biodegradable Renewalube. Targets: adhesive Target Spots, Shoot·N·C, Dirty Bird and Ground Strike polymer targets, which self-seal and withstand hundreds of shots.

Of the products that cross customs to reach Spain, two arrive with Spanish labels printed at the factory: the 3 fl oz liquid Perma Blue and Super Blue each have their own maker’s listing as Spanish, with a different reference from the standard version. The rest spans metal finishing, wood finishing, cleaning, targets and the firing point.

Product families

What we distribute

In the maker’s order: metal finish, wood finish, cleaning and lubrication, targets and firing point.

Metal finishing

Cold blue, browning and blackening, plus the remover and degreaser preparing the part. The catalogue’s oldest section.

  • Perma Blue

    Perma Blue

Cold blue for steel, available as liquid or paste. It produces an even blue-black finish without remaining tacky, and is used to restore a scratch or worn area without stripping the firearm. The 3 fl oz liquid bottle we distribute is the factory’s Spanish-label version, with its own reference.

  • Super Blue

    Super Blue

The same principle at twice the concentration, for highly polished steel and nickel- or chromium-alloy hardened steel. The 3 fl oz bottle has a Spanish label; 32 fl oz is the gunsmith size.

  • Presto Blue Mag

    Presto Blue Mag

Liquid blue formulated for deep colour and a complete reblue rather than a touch-up. Not for stainless steel.

  • Plum Brown

    Plum Brown

Barrel browning for the plum-brown finish of an original muzzleloader or replica, distinct from blueing.

  • Aluminum Black

    Aluminum Black

Blackener for aluminium parts, restoring scratches where steel blue has no effect.

  • Brass Black

    Brass Black

Blackener for brass, copper and bronze: furniture, butt plates and non-steel parts on old firearms.

  • Blueing kits

    Blueing kits

A complete blueing job in one box, with everything required before and after: blueing solution, degreaser, blue-and-rust remover, applicators, sponge, cloth, fine steel wool and Barricade wipes. The Deluxe kit adds Tru-Oil, walnut stain and stock conditioner, so it also covers the wood.

  • Blue & Rust Remover

    Blue & Rust Remover

Removes old blue and rust to leave bare metal, the first step before reblueing and included in both kits.

  • Cleaner-Degreaser

    Cleaner-Degreaser

A liquid degreaser for metal surfaces. Any remaining oil creates an area that will not take colour, so without this preparation the blueing develops in patches.

  • Presto Gun Blue pen

    Presto Gun Blue pen

Instant steel black in a marker, for a rubbed trigger-guard edge or cover without opening a bottle.

    Reference

  • Super Black pens

    Super Black pens

A black touch-up marker for painted or anodised surfaces, supplied in two finishes that must not be mixed: a gloss mark beside a matt surface stands out more than the scratch itself.

  • Super Bright pens

    Super Bright pens

Sight paint pens in white, red and green. Restore chipped or dull sights to a visible, non-permanent colour.

  • Sight Black

    Sight Black

Aerosol leaving a velvety matt black on sights and metal, suppressing glare in the sight picture.

Wood finishing

From bare stock to finished piece: sealer, stain, oil and wax. Tru-Oil is the company’s best-known product.

  • Tru-Oil Gun Stock Finish

    Tru-Oil Gun Stock Finish

Linseed and other natural oils producing the traditional hand-rubbed finish. Water-resistant and does not cloud, yellow or crack. Hand bottle, workshop bottle and gunsmith quart.

  • Kit Tru-Oil

    Kit Tru-Oil

A complete stock in one box: 3 fl oz Tru-Oil, walnut stain and stock conditioner, medium and coarse abrasive, fine steel wool, service and polishing cloths, plus guide. Applicator in reusable bag.

    Reference

  • Gun Stock Sealer & Filler

    Gun Stock Sealer & Filler

Colourless sealer that blocks moisture and fills wood pores in one coat, before oil.

  • Walnut stain

    Walnut stain

Water-based, true-colour, non-bleeding stain giving a clean deep colour without obscuring the grain. Fast drying.

  • Gun Stock Wax

    Gun Stock Wax

Wax for a finished stock: protects and polishes and, unlike oil, is not removed by hand contact.

  • Stock Rejuvenator

    Stock Rejuvenator

For non-wood stocks: restores faded synthetic colour and also shines plastic, leather and metal. Pump spray.

Cleaning and lubrication

Bore and action solvents, rust protection, oils and greases. Half the catalogue and half of what we sell.

  • Gun Scrubber

    Gun Scrubber

Pressurised solvent that drives in, carries away dirt and dissolved residue, then evaporates without residue. Four cans from pocket to gunsmith size.

  • Aerosol firearm cleaner

    Aerosol firearm cleaner

High-pressure aerosol removing dirt, firing residue and oil without residue.

  • Bore Scrubber 2-in-1

    Bore Scrubber 2-in-1

A bore solvent that attacks and dissolves every type of residue —lead, copper, plastic, carbon and powder— with one product. Available in a bottle, aerosol and foaming gel, the last of which remains inside the barrel instead of running out.

  • No. 77 Muzzle Magic

    No. 77 Muzzle Magic

Water-based muzzleloader solvent removing corrosive black-powder residue and preventing rust. Flip cap.

  • Brass case cleaner

    Brass case cleaner

Reloading-bench concentrate removing case lubricant, oil, dirt and tarnish from brass. A 16 fl oz bottle makes up to two gallons, without fumes or brass attack.

  • Barricade

    Barricade

Long-term protection against rust: it displaces moisture from the pores of the metal and leaves a film that seals the surface. It comes in three application formats, including individual wipes for carrying in a gun case.

  • Hopper Spit

    Hopper Spit

Metal protectant for harsh conditions and long storage. The maker reports outlasting competitors in salt-spray chamber tests.

  • Synthetic Gun Oil

    Synthetic Gun Oil

The company’s general-purpose oil: it reduces friction between contacting surfaces and protects the metal. Available as an aerosol for reaching the action, a spout can for controlled dosing, a pocket pump spray and a pen with two applicators.

  • Renewalube

    Renewalube

USDA-certified plant-based biodegradable oil and grease. Displace moisture, prevent corrosion and lubricate, with a very high flash point.

  • RIG Universal Gun Grease

    RIG Universal Gun Grease

The company’s traditional storage grease for rifles, pistols, shotguns and muzzleloaders: a lubricant and preservative in one, applied before putting a firearm away for a season. Available in a gunsmith’s jar, a bench jar and a pocket tube.

  • SNO Universal Gun Grease

    SNO Universal Gun Grease

Grease for moving parts: reduces friction, semi-transparent, non-staining and polymer-safe.

  • Choke Tube Lube

    Choke Tube Lube

Grease for choke threads: prevents seizure, withstands barrel heat and protects against moisture, salt and rust.

  • Moly Lube

    Moly Lube

A dry-film lubricant that leaves a smooth, low-friction surface on the metal instead of a layer of oil that traps dust. It is intended for the inside of the action.

  • MLP lubricant pen

    MLP lubricant pen

The dry-film lubricant in marker form, applying lubricant precisely to the component that requires it and nowhere else.

    Reference

  • Aerosol packs

    Aerosol packs

Cans used together: 1-2-3 contains 10 fl oz Bore Scrubber, Gun Scrubber and Barricade —dissolve, clean, protect—; the pair combines 10 fl oz Gun Scrubber with pocket synthetic oil.

  • Cleaning brushes

    Cleaning brushes

Sets of three brushes —nylon, brass and stainless—, straight or angled for hidden corners such as bolt tail or extractor recess.

  • Universal cleaning kit

    Universal cleaning kit

Stainless rods and accessories for rifle, pistol and shotgun, with threads compatible with most market brushes, mops and tips.
